GIMP Plugin Registry

I'm a little new to image editing. I use the GIMP mainly for static texture creation.
I'd like to know how to create textures that can be seen through. Like wall vent or grates. I was told to use Alpha Channels to achieve this but found myself totally lost when trying to work with it. Any advice/ suggestions?
