Icon with transparent background for my video clip

I want to create an icon with transparent background but everytime i try to do this GIMP save my icon with white background.
How would you do it ?
Any help and direction will be appriciated.

Transparent Bgnd

You should save the image as a PNG if you want the transparency to be free of those bloody jaggies I hate so much.

when saving as a PNG and you have the transparent layer showing, make sure you uncheck the "Save background color" box so the transparency remains clear instead of it being replaced by whatever background color you have at the time.

"Save background color"

"Save background color" doesn't replace the transparency with the current background color.

It sets the bKGD chunk which may be used by applications that don't support PNG's alpha channels - for example obsolete versions of Internet Explorer.

transparent background for logos

This happens to me EVERY time. Think it is something to do with creating a transparent alpha layer/channel.

FIrst Layer/transparency/add

FIrst Layer/transparency/add alpha channel:
Then you may have transparency

BUT to preserve when saving you should save as PNG not as jpg
